Ozarks Tech offers flexible courses that help you earn additional permits and certificates recognized by the Missouri Dental Board. Each course builds on your existing credentials and enhances the services you can provide.
Prerequisites for Dental Expanded Function Courses:
- Certified Dental Assistant (CDA), or
- Successful completion of the Missouri Dental Assisting Skills (MDAS) Examination, or
- Dental Hygiene License
All expanded-function course curriculum has been approved by the Missouri Dental Board.

The MDAS Exam, formerly called the Missouri Test of Basic Dental Assisting Skills, serves as one pathway to qualify for expanded-function training. DENS 100: Dental Assisting Review

Short-Term Course Credits: 0 This 8-week, self-paced review course is conducted entirely online via OTC’s Canvas learning platform. The course prepares dental assistants for the Missouri Dental Assisting Skills (MDAS) exam. Topics to be reviewed are oral disease prevention; dental materials; medical emergencies; charting; legal & jurisprudence; radiation health & safety; infection prevention; and tooth morphology. Passing the MDAS exam is one of the pathways to be eligible to take any of the expanded function courses. The MDAS exam must be completed through the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). Enrollment is available at any time.
DENS 110: Dental Nitrous Oxide Permit

Short-Term Course Credits: 0 The purpose of this educational activity is preparation of dental assistants in specific area of assisting in administration and monitoring of nitrous oxide as mandated by the Missouri State Dental Board. When successfully completed, the dental assistant will submit a permit application to the state of Missouri. This course of instruction includes review of Missouri jurisprudence, dental anatomy/physiology, pharmacology, sedation equipment, infection prevention, patient monitoring, and recognition and management of medical emergencies.

Short-Term Course Credits: 0 The prosthodontic expanded function course consists of techniques and concepts associated with fixed and removable prosthetic expanded function procedures delegated to the dental auxiliary in the state of Missouri. The curriculum includes apply tissue retracting material prior to impression of a fixed prosthesis; extra-oral adjustment of fixed or removable prosthesis; final cementation of any permanent appliance or prosthesis; making impressions for the fabrication of any fixed or removable prosthesis/appliance; and placement of temporary soft liners in a removable prosthesis.

Short-Term Course Credits: 0 The orthodontic expanded function course consists of techniques and concepts associated with the orthodontic expanded function procedures delegated to the dental auxiliary in the state of Missouri. The curriculum includes impression taking for dental study models and fabrication of orthodontic appliance, band and bracket placement, band and bracket removal, prelimiary bending of dental arch wire and minor palliative care of dental emergencies.

Short-Term Course Credits: 0 The restorative expanded function course consists of techniques and concepts associated with the restorative I and restorative II expanded function procedures delegated to the dental auxiliary in the state of Missouri. The curriculum includes sizing and cementing of prefabricated crowns; placing, condensing, carving, and finishing amalgam for Class I, II, III, IV, V, VI restorations; placing and finishing composite for Class I, II, III, IV, V, VI restorations; minor palliative care of dental emergencies.
