Long before classes and coursework, Ozarks Tech student Andrew Perkin was already creating stories in his imagination. Those early daydreams evolved into SuperAndrew418, his self‑published action‑adventure comic book series.

Perkin began developing the series shortly after enrolling at Ozarks Tech in fall 2020, encouraged by Graphic Design Technology (GDT) instructor Craig Schutt, whose industry experience includes work as a computer colorist for DC Comics and Disney. Schutt teaches students to create sequential graphic art from an idea to a finished product.

“Almost every comic book fan has ambitions to someday publish their own comics,” Schutt said. “However, it is extremely rare for someone to actually follow through and do the hard work. Andrew had the resolve to make his dreams a reality. I couldn’t be prouder of his accomplishments.”

In the GDT program, Perkin developed valuable skills that helped him bring his comic book to life, including project management, graphic design and narrative techniques like character development.

Many of Perkin’s characters are inspired by friends he made growing up and during his time at Glendale High School in Springfield. In SuperAndrew418, a group of students, led by their teacher, Mr. Johnson, gain superpowers after drinking fruit punch mixed with a mysterious ingredient.

Their new abilities—ranging from electricity to fire to slime—help them battle the Buzzy Bee Mafia, a villainous group that dabbles in bullying and drugs. Together, the students race to collect eight powerful gemstones and protect their school.

Volume One is available in print online, and each issue is published online at Perkin’s website. And for readers waiting to see what happens next—good news: Volume Two launches this month.

“The most challenging part was proofreading each issue and volume with my editor,” Perkin said. “But each time I complete one, I feel like I’m one step closer to accomplishing my lifelong dream of being a cartoonist.”

Perkin completed his associate degree in graphic design last spring and will finish his electronic media production program in May. He plans to keep creating new adventures and encourages fellow creatives to stay committed to their goals.

“Follow your dreams,” Perkin said. “Imagine all the great possibilities you’ll encounter.”
